Perched on an escarpment, the 16+acre historic Samuel Sloan Estate provides a beatific eagle's view of West Point Academy and the surrounding verdant countryside on each bank of the Hudson River. Located in Garrison, New York and originally named Oulagisket, the summer estate was built in 1864 for the 19th century railroad magnate. Upon inheriting the newly renamed "Lisburne Grange, " Samuel Sloane Jr. and his wife Katherine began a large-scale renovation that would expand the house and transform it from its original Carpenter Gothic to Italianate. Fletcher Steele, one of the 20th century's most renowned landscape architects, was commissioned to redesign the topography to include beautiful gardens and vistas, some of which still remain: "The Ruins" and the iconic swimming pool grotto, for example.  In 2014, the manor underwent its final metamorphosis. Today's more stately Greek revival facade features a two-story portico with enormous columns, a full width second floor loggia, and a one-of-a-kind marble fountain-architectural revisions, more befitting a magnate.

 

Fully renovated and spanning approximately 11, 800 sq. ft., the mansion offers five to six bedrooms, six full & three half baths, and a full floor allocated for entertaining and recreation. The entertaining floor consists of four wings. The formal wing begins with an impressive vestibule opening onto a great room featuring the grand salon, a center gallery, and the music room. Continuing from the salon, one finds the north-facing baronial formal dining room that easily accommodates 16 guests! Crossing the corridor, passing the elevator and second guest powder room, we arrive in the south wing where we find a handsome antechamber that is accessible from the music room, the distinguished library, and the capacious eat-in commercial-grade kitchen featuring top of the line fixtures and appliances: Officine Gullo, Gaggenau, Miele, Sub-Zero, etc.

 

Beyond the kitchen, pantry area, and the auxiliary staircase is the luxurious amenity wing where residents and guests can enjoy the sauna, steam room, hot tub, and /or gather in the lofty entertainment lounge that opens onto the pool area. The outdoor Gunite swimming pool is flanked by a cozy pergola, lounging areas, a dining pavilion, and the great lawn.

 

The front upper level of the mansion consists of a central gallery and four private chambers. The master bedroom suite has two full baths, a front facing bedroom and separate dressing/sitting room/study-both with access to the loggia that enjoys sweeping views of West Point, Catskills and beyond. On each side of the gallery are additional bedrooms with baths. In a separate auxiliary section of the upper level are two more bedrooms with baths, and a laundry room. There is a three car-garage and guest parking area also. A full attic and cellar offer the new owner many more possibilities for additional functional rooms and storage. There are also plans to renovate the original 3500sf carriage house into guest and staff apartments plus two-car garage.

 

LEED® certified, new upgrades include maintenance free roofing that will likely not need repair or replacement for 100 years. The exterior of the home was refinished with hand-fired, reclaimed local brick. Original finishes such as lime plaster and wood flooring were retained. The facade was repaired and sealed with an airtight liquid membrane and a continuous layer of 4" rigid insulation. High-performance triple-pane windows and appropriately sized geothermal wells were installed to provide hot water and space conditioning. Ceilings, floors, and crawl spaces were insulated and fireplaces were refitted with airtight flues. An energy recovery ventilation system optimizes air quality, filtering out particulates, and delivers fresh air throughout the house. An extensive rainwater harvesting system captures water off the roof and retains it in a large cistern for landscape irrigation. Solar-tracking array provides onsite renewable power.
